If you were hoping to squad up in Marathon on Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2… you might want to pump the brakes. Bungie has confirmed that the highly anticipated extraction shooter won’t be launching on Nintendo’s next-gen hardware — at least not anytime soon.
This news comes straight from Marathon Game Director Joe Ziegler, who recently spoke with Japanese outlet Famitsu. When asked about a potential Switch 2 version, Ziegler said there are no current plans to bring the game beyond PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Still, he didn’t slam the door entirely shut — Bungie might consider a port later on, depending on how things shake out.
So Why Did Fans Think It Was Happening?
Let’s rewind a bit. Back when Bungie announced Marathon and Nintendo teased its new console, fans started connecting the dots. Especially once rumors around Bungie’s other in-development project — Project Gummy Bears — suggested it was targeting the Switch.
Add to that Bungie’s new identity under Sony (which has already shown it’s open to cross-platform with LEGO Horizon Adventures landing on the Switch in early 2024), and you’ve got a recipe for speculation. Many believed Marathon could ride that same wave and become one of the Switch 2’s flagship third-party shooters.
🎨 A Perfect Match… Visually Speaking
Let’s be honest — on paper, Marathon kinda fits the Nintendo mold.
Its vibrant, neon-drenched aesthetic stands apart from the gritty realism of most shooters, making it a natural fit for the Switch’s slightly more playful visual identity. It’s stylish, clean, and not drenched in blood — something Nintendo tends to prefer with its third-party partnerships.
Could It Still Happen Down the Line?
Maybe. Just don’t hold your breath for launch.
If Bungie isn’t already working on a Switch 2 version behind the scenes (and it sounds like they’re not), it could take a year or more after release to spin one up. For reference: Rocket League came to the Switch two years after its original debut.
With Marathon scheduled to drop in September 2025, a potential Switch port wouldn’t hit until late 2026 or 2027 — if it happens at all.
